Manifold ︎

Manifold is a material and spatial intervention in the courtyard of the Hôtel Tresorier de la Bourse in the historic district of Montpellier as part of the 14th edition of the Festival des Architectures Vives (FAV). FAV is an annual cultural festival whose mission is to bring awareness of art and architecture to the general public of the city. Our proposal explores ideas of geometry, lightness, perception and movement through the deployment of an installation consisting of multiple colored lines that interweave to create a single fluid polychromatic construct.

The visitors experience this as a continuous boundary, recognizing it to be separated surfaces only when in the middle of the courtyard. Using the existing arched doorways and apertures as endpoints, the installation reasserts the courtyard as a collective space, choreographing new ways of moving and facilitating meetings at different intimacies, whether the space is tight or expansive. A suspended frame brings the ropes into tension, serving both as threshold and viewing frame to capture the dynamism of the space.
